I opened up two photo albums and have captured just a few memories to share with you here. I was remembering my mother. She pursued her dream of becoming a registered nurse and then stayed home to raise four children. I think of the days when she became a homemaker, perhaps wishing that it was possible to return to nursing. She did this once my sister got to junior high school. Twenty five years after graduating she went to her 25th nursing reunion.
I was also thinking back to 50 years ago when I graduated from high school.
It hardly seems possible that so many years have passed by.
I graduated from a girl's school and tradition was that we rented a dance club and hired a live band for our graduation dance. Our parents were invited. Did my mother take the picture of Dad and I dancing? I think she wore a blue lace dress but wish that I had that picture.
Many of us made our own dresses, if shoes didn't match they could be dyed to match.
Some of us attended the Royal Military College Balls so our dresses, long gloves and necklaces borrowed from our mothers could be worn again.
On Sunday our graduation took place in The Royal Theatre. My little sister was chosen to be one of the flower girls and she held a pillow which held the grad pins that were presented to us. Our teachers presented us each with a bouquet of yellow roses.
I'm looking forward to seeing many of my high school friends when we "girls" gather on the grounds of St Ann's this summer to remember the time when we were young and carefree, 50 years ago.
Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day ! I'm linking to Judith's Lavender Cottage here.

How I enjoyed this post, Sheila! The dresses on the graduates, the lovely ceremony and the shot with the wee girls coming up the steps - so evocative of the time. I must show The Great Dane the photo you with the cadet. He certainly looks familiar!
ReplyDeleteI hope that there will be a moment for a cup of tea and a visit when you are here for the reunion!
Great memories and collages...50 yrs...my graduation was 40 yrs ago
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to dig into the old photos isn't it? You had a very special graduation and just seeing the gloves and corsage brings back fond memories.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to Mosaic Monday Sheila.
Great memories for you, love your collages!
ReplyDeleteSheila, Thanks for sharing the old photos. They are great fun. Enjoy the reunion. Sylvia D
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed learning more about you Sheila, and seeing these wonderful photos too. It's fun to look back and see how things were many years ago. I hope you are having a good week. Pam
ReplyDeleteThose were the days. I'm not far behind you but my high school was huge and I don't even think they have reunions. I be you'll all take up where you left off. You'll have to tell us about the reunion!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness! Your mother looks like a model and you look so very much like her. Your littles sure were cute (and I am certain they still are)! I see you had put them to work. =D Let us know how the reunion goes. (Almost the last thing in the world that I'd want to do, but I realize I'm weird.)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post, Sheila, full of reminiscences and hints to locales I recognize. These photos from the past are wonderful, inspiring memories of days gone by. Women dressed up more in the past - I loved opening the photos larger to see the hairstyles and fashions. Beautiful!
ReplyDeletePhotos are the pilot light of memory.
